During the 1980's I recall visiting scenes of devastation created by the fires which devoured great swathes of bush in the Dandenong Hills. Not too distant from Melbourne, many trees and homes were destroyed, as the winds whipped the flames into a frenzy of unpredictable destruction. It seemed almost impossible that the area would recover, however, undaunted residents rebuilt houses and the indigenous species of flora regenerated and replaced the blackened spaces.
