AWAITING DEMOLITION - THESSALONIKI

The old city was home to a great variety of racial groups . Amongst them was a large population of Jews, who as merchants lived and traded from large family mansions . Many were involved in the textile business both importing fabrics and creating hand - crafted items . Their houses were on a grand scale, possessing balconied upper floors with ornate wrought iron decoration . Such houses are now abandoned awaiting demolition .
