The second city of Greece, Capitol of Central Macedonia. It is considered to be the 'cultural capitol' of modern Greece . Founded in 315 BC it's history spans some 2,300 years . Around the time of the Roman Empire it was an important centre for the spread of Christianity. As the second city of Byzantium, after Constantinople, it had a 14th century population which exceeded London . It was annexed to Greece in 1913 after centuries of Ottoman rule .
